Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has added fuel to the highly anticipated box office showdown between Ranveer Singh starrer Dhurandhar 2 and Yash led Toxic by coining a new term for the clash. The maverick director has dubbed the March 19, 2026 face off as Dhuroxic, positioning it as a fundamental ideological battle between contrasting cinematic approaches rather than just another release date collision.
In a lengthy social media post, Varma characterized the encounter as Judgement Day for Indian cinema, drawing sharp distinctions between what he perceives as Dhurandhar‘s gritty realism versus Toxic’s stylized fantasy. The director’s provocative commentary has sparked widespread discussion about the nature of contemporary Indian blockbuster filmmaking and audience preferences.
RGV Contrasts Cause And Effect With Style Over Substance
Varma did not hold back in his assessment of the two films’ fundamental approaches to storytelling. He described Dhurandhar as being constructed on cause leading to effect and consequence, illustrating that violence has moral, psychological, and political roots. According to the filmmaker, characters in the Ranveer Singh starrer act out of necessity rather than for appearing cool, trusting the audience’s intelligence.
In contrast, RGV characterized Toxic as a film where style takes precedence over logic, with violence portrayed to express attitude rather than necessity. The director suggested that the Yash film presumes audiences seek stimulation over emotional connection. He elaborated that Dhurandhar acknowledges harsh realities and disturbs viewers, while Toxic promotes fantasy disguised as seriousness and aims to impress.
Relatable Protagonist Versus Invulnerable Icon
The filmmaker drew attention to the protagonist’s characterization in both films. Varma noted that Dhurandhar’s lead character is relatable, capable of failure, misjudgment, suffering, and aging, with strength that is limited and contextual. This grounded approach stands in stark opposition to Toxic‘s protagonist, who according to RGV is invulnerable from the start, with the narrative contorting itself to safeguard his ultra cool factor in a world designed to idolize him.
Varma also highlighted the difference in communication styles, stating that Dhurandhar communicates through silence while Toxic is loud. He extended the contrast to cinematographic choices, noting that Dhurandhar‘s camera acts as an observer with observational frames and editing that honors time, geography, and narrative. Meanwhile, Toxic’s camera acts as a master, with slow motion distorting reality and editing creating a false sense of intensity.
Will Dhuroxic End Hero Worship Or Reinforce It
Framing the clash as a cinematic litmus test for Indian viewers, Ram Gopal Varma posed several provocative questions about long standing notions of hero worship and stylized violence. He questioned whether audiences would keep cheering for the same dark hero striding in slow motion or equate smoking in slow motion with depth of character. The director likened the experience of watching both films to being in a war zone versus attending a fashion shoot.
Varma concluded with a thought provoking statement suggesting the clash could either herald the dawn of the end of hero worship led by the pan India giants from the south, or confirm that audiences still desire larger than life, god like figures. He asserted that Dhuroxic could be a pivotal moment where audiences cease to be devotees and ridicule bulletproof masculinity, demonstrating they no longer seek gods but rather relatable humans, or it could be the other way around.
