There’s a change in the Google Weather app for Android. Instead of opening the app, it now directs you towards Search results for weather. The change is still rolling out, having been observed by many users, showing that Google is on the point of shutting it down for good.

Google Weather app

It’s a different story for Pixel users. The Pixel Weather app remains and still gets updates. This will leave the users of the Google Weather app on other Android phones to search for a replacement, especially if the Search results aren’t able to supply adequate detail.

As it is, most weather apps don’t collate their meteorological data. For instance, Google gets the data for the Pixel Weather app from sources worldwide ( including the National Weather Service and the Met Office ). It’s advisable to consider where the data is coming from, especially when choosing a new weather app.

In the US, for example, almost all data is sourced from the National Weather Service (NWS), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It’s supplied for free, and companies use weather modelling to make predictions based on the data.

However, Google doesn’t allow you choose the source of your data. This is because it has its forecasting model that’s exclusive to its weather reports. The Weather Channel is recommended if you can choose the source of your data. It was identified as the most accurate forecaster overall. It showed in a two-week study that was organized by the University of Reading’s Department of Meteorology and ForecastWatch’s 2021-2024 Weather Forecast Accuracy Overview.

The Weather Channel uses data from many sources, plus the NWS. It has its own app and offers the most accurate predictions as well. Thus, it’s recommended.

Nevertheless, there are alternative apps you can still consider. The Pixel Weather, for instance, isn’t accurate enough for critical decisions, but its easy-to-read UI makes it perfect for getting a rough idea of the weather.

Another one is AccuWeather. It’s seen as the second most accurate forecaster in the University of Reading report, and is often listed in “best weather apps” lists. Though, there has been complaints as regards its forecasting accuracy, and having been involved with lobbying attempts to shut down the NWS and commercialize its forecasts. It’s not a good option.

EverythingWeather is small though popular. It’s recommended if you’re interested in the raw data behind your weather reports. It sources data directly from the NWS and displays it in a readable UI. Though it’s only available in the US, and the level of data is unnecessary especially if you aren’t planning on critical outdoor activities.

For the Weather Channel’s app, it’s ideal because its home screen offers a quick overview of everything you need to know for the day. This involves what the temperature feels like, wind speeds, and a brief outlook as well. It displays ads, and you must subscribe to unlock advanced features like a 15-minute forecast. It also offers accurate weather reports, and an easy-to-understand daily weather report. But you must subscribe. Though for your day-to-day forecasting needs, it doesn’t require any subscription.

In 2025, Google released a new AI model, WeatherNext 2, and it scored as the leading model for tracking all 13 storms in the hurricane season. Though, these forecasts rely on AI, which is prone to hallucinations.

Notwithstanding, it’s advisable to be vigilant about the Google’s AI predictions, as well as EverythingWeather’s wealth of forecasting information. Whatever may be the case, AccuWeather isn’t a good option.
